Getting Peony Buds to Open: Patience Plus 3 Tricks
A peony that won't open usually isn't defective — it just needs time and warmth.

Peonies are usually sold as firm buds — and sometimes a bud stays stubbornly closed. That's not faulty stock: peonies are temperamental and need the right temperature, sometimes a nudge.
Why they won't open: peonies are extremely temperature-sensitive. A bud opens only after the stem has stood several hours at 18–22°C in water. Too cold (under 15°C) and it stays tight. Too warm (over 26°C) and it opens too fast and wilts.
Trick 1 — warm water: place buds for 30–60 minutes in lukewarm (NOT hot) water, around 25–28°C. Simulates a spring morning and triggers opening.
Trick 2 — gentle bud opening: with fingertips, very carefully squeeze the bud between thumb and index finger — like a mandarin. Loosens the outer petal sheath, which sometimes sticks. Caution: don't tear, just press.
Trick 3 — wipe off sticky outer layer: young peony buds have a sticky, sugary coating (honeydew). When it dries, the bud glues itself shut. A warm damp cloth gently swept over the bud releases the coating.
What doesn't work: placing in the sun (burns the plant), in oven or dryer (destroys the bloom), opening the calyx with scissors (irreversibly destroys the bloom).
Time: with normal care, peonies need 3–6 days between purchase and fully open bloom. Patience rewards you with one of floristry's most spectacular blooms. In a hurry, buy already-open peonies (shorter vase life but less waiting).
If after 5 days + warm water + honeydew wiping a bud is still tight, it was harvested unripe. Happens occasionally with very early season stock. Florist goodwill: exchange or complain to us.
Season: peonies are at true peak only mid-May to mid-June. Outside that window they're southern imports — usually more expensive and harder to open. Peony lovers buy in season.
Frequently asked
- How long do peonies take to open?
- At room temperature 3–6 days. In a cooler room (16–18°C) longer. To accelerate, place in lukewarm water for 30 minutes.
- Can I buy open peonies?
- Yes, often available from a florist's stock late in the day. They last only 3–5 days in the vase but look spectacular right away.
- Which varieties are especially hard to open?
- Coral Charm and Sarah Bernhardt with their massive double blooms are slowest. Single peony cultivars open faster.
