Mother's Day Flowers
Mother's Day in Germany falls on the second Sunday of May — right in the strongest week of the European cut-flower season. The best Mother's Day bouquet uses what's at peak at the auction that morning: peonies, ranunculus, late tulips, early lilac.

The classic Mother's Day flower is the rose — and for a classic mother, that's a safe choice. But: roses in May are rarely as beautiful as peonies in May. Peonies bloom for only three or four weeks a year, of which one falls on Mother's Day. Catch that week and you give a flower that simply won't exist by July — exactly what makes it the Mother's Day flower.
For something less romantic and more personal: ranunculus and anemones are still in season in early May and feel less formal than roses. A mix of ranunculus, peonies and a little baby's breath produces a bouquet that doesn't read 'discount Mother's Day' but 'I chose this'.
What doesn't pay off on Mother's Day: pre-packed supermarket bouquets. Those flowers have been sitting since Wednesday — Mother's Day is Sunday. At a florist the bouquet comes from water that was refilled the night before with stems straight from the Veiling Rhein-Maas auction.
Personal tip: fewer stems, better quality. A bouquet of seven flawless peony buds reads stronger than 25 mediocre roses. Mothers notice the difference.
Almost any colour works on Mother's Day except loud red — red is romantic, not familial. Pastels (pink, peach, white) stay the safe register. For mothers with strong personality, reach for apricot, violet, or a mix with yellow accents.
Frequently asked
- How many stems should a Mother's Day bouquet have?
- Better 7–9 excellent stems than 20 mediocre ones. With peonies or hydrangeas, five stems are plenty — the heads are large enough that adding more just adds cost.
- Are red roses appropriate for Mother's Day?
- Traditionally no — red roses are the romantic code, not the familial one. If you want roses, go for apricot, peach, white or soft pink.
- When should I order for Mother's Day?
- Friday evening is ideal — we source specifically for your order at Saturday's auction. Later orders we still try to fulfil from the shop stock.
- Are potted plants an alternative to a bouquet?
- Yes — a potted hydrangea or orchid lasts weeks, sometimes months. Works especially well for mothers who enjoy gardening or have a balcony.
