Birthday Flowers
Birthday flowers are the most common order in any florist's shop. Also the trickiest: what's perfect for a best friend misses the mark for a colleague. What pleases your mother-in-law irritates a 25-year-old niece. Here's an honest breakdown.

For close family and best friends, a colourful, generous bouquet almost always works — peonies (May/June), ranunculus, tulips, plus hydrangeas as volume carriers. Saturated colour is fine, but tuned: two dominant tones plus one neutral.
For male birthday recipients, the rule is: less sweet, more structure. Sunflowers, calla, iris, gladioli. Deep tones (bordeaux, aubergine, rich green) instead of pastels. No ruffles, no baby pink.
Colleagues and business contacts: elegance, not intimacy. A simple composition of three to four stem types in a calm tone — white plus green, or white plus aubergine. No roses (too romantic), no wedding-look.
Older recipients (mother-in-law, grandparents) often appreciate classics: roses in muted colour, carnations in pastel, some baby's breath. Less avant-garde, more 'the way it used to be'.
Younger recipients (under 30) today often expect a wild-meadow look: loosely bound, lots of greenery, gathered-from-a-walk feel. Not a perfect pyramid, more spontaneous.
A rule across all ages: skip the 5-euro discount bouquet. Birthdays are a rare moment to make a statement — save somewhere else.
Frequently asked
- Which flowers do you give a man for his birthday?
- Sunflowers, calla, iris, gladioli — structural flowers, no ruffles. Darker or cleaner tones (sun yellow, aubergine, white), no baby pink. Flowers are no longer a 'women-only' gift — the right pick makes the difference.
- How much should a good birthday bouquet cost?
- A small personal bouquet runs €25–35, a proper birthday bouquet €45–65, a generous statement bouquet €80+. Money buys flower quality and stem count, not brand markup.
- Are red roses a good birthday gift?
- For a partner yes — for everyone else, probably not. Red roses are romantic code. For a mother-in-law, colleague or best friend, go for pink, white, yellow or mixed colour.
- Do you also deliver birthday flowers on weekends?
- Saturday: yes, regular. Sunday: on request and with a surcharge, as our shop is closed on Sundays. Orders by Saturday noon in that case.
