Why Eucalyptus Makes Every Bouquet Better

Eucalyptus has replaced baby's breath as standard greenery. Here's why — and which varieties actually work.

Eucalyptus as greenery

Eucalyptus has been the dominant greenery in modern floristry since around 2015. It's nearly replaced the 90s and 2000s baby's breath. Here's why, and which varieties fit what.

Why eucalyptus works: soft silver-green is colour-neutral and supports any main flower without competing. Baby's breath was too small and too white — read placard. Eucalyptus has volume and a hint of colour.

Scent: eucalyptus smells mild-fresh (pleasant for most). That makes it popular in hotels and reception areas too — it 'perfumes' the space discreetly.

Vase life: 10–14 days in the vase, often longer than the main flowers. Meaning eucalyptus can be reused for a second composition after the first bouquet.

Varieties — Eucalyptus cinerea (classic): round silvery leaves, most common type. Pairs with nearly any main flower, our most-used strand.

Varieties — Eucalyptus parvifolia: small-leaved, finely branched, drapes elastically. Beautiful for bridal bouquets with draping.

Varieties — Eucalyptus populus (also 'Babyblue'): heart-shaped leaves, very modern. Popular in Scandinavian style.

Varieties — Eucalyptus baby blue (specialty): smallest round leaves, blue-silver, for mini bouquets and boutonnieres.

Varieties — Eucalyptus stuartiana / apple eucalyptus: larger leaves, intense scent. More summer floristry than year-round.

Where eucalyptus fits less: classic funeral floristry (too modern), baroque receptions in old villas (doesn't match style), weddings with traditional 19th-century variety (anachronistic).

Combinations that always work: roses + eucalyptus (classic), peonies + eucalyptus (modern romantic), sunflowers + eucalyptus (modernises them), dried flowers + eucalyptus.

Combinations that are tricky: eucalyptus + baby's breath (too much greenery), eucalyptus + many meadow flowers (eucalyptus then reads too 'tidy'), eucalyptus + lilies (too heavy in register).

Drying: eucalyptus dries excellently. Hang upside down 2 weeks, keeps colour and form. Classic in Advent wreaths and dried bouquets.

Frequently asked

Is eucalyptus enough as the only greenery?
Yes — and that's often today's modern look. For 'more' combine with small greenery accents (olive branch, pistachio).
Is eucalyptus low-maintenance in the vase?
Very — woody stem needs attention when cutting (score crosswise like hydrangeas), otherwise lasts 2 weeks without further effort.
Can I plant eucalyptus outdoors myself?
In Düsseldorf only conditionally — eucalyptus isn't winter-hardy enough. For own planting, you need a conservatory or potted plant with winter protection. Floristry eucalyptus comes from Australian plantations.
