Elephant's Ears

Bergenia · Saxifragaceae

Bergenia is one of the most honest perennials in the range: evergreen, indestructible and among the very first to flower in early spring, when its thick stems push pink bell blooms out of the leathery foliage. Many varieties turn their large leaves bronze-red in winter — structure for the bed when nothing else is standing. It earns its nickname elephant's ears with those broad, leathery leaves.

The common garden varieties mostly derive from Bergenia cordifolia and hybrids: ‚Herbstblüte‘ flowers a second time in autumn, ‚Silberlicht‘ opens white blooms that fade to pink, and modern selections like ‚Eroica‘ score with especially intense purple-red winter foliage. Depending on variety, the flower stems reach 30 to 50 centimetres.

Hardly any perennial tolerates so many sites: bergenia grows in sun and shade, in almost any soil, and copes with root pressure under trees as well as dry corners by the house. It only develops its finest winter foliage colour, though, in sunny, lean spots — in deep shade the leaf stays green.

Its toughness makes it a classic for grave planting and the low-maintenance border: once established, it needs no dividing, no feeding and no watering. All you do is remove tired leaves and spent flower stems in spring — that is essentially the whole year's care.

A detail for connoisseurs: the flowers appear so early in the year that late frosts occasionally catch them — the open bells then turn brown. Varieties like ‚Herbstblüte‘ compensate with a second flush. Queen bumblebees out early in the year are among the most important visitors to the early blooms.

In floristry the large, leathery leaves are outstanding, extremely long-lasting foliage — as a collar around spring bouquets or as a base in arrangements they hold for weeks. In the garden, bergenia looks loveliest with other spring heralds: hellebores, primroses and horned violets in front, ferns as summer neighbours.

Bergenia is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs and children. The leathery, tannin-rich leaves hardly invite nibbling anyway; eating larger amounts is still not advised.

Overview: toxic & non-toxic plants for cats, dogs and children

Care

  • 01Sun to shade both work; for the finest winter colour, plant sunny and lean.
  • 02Water only in the planting year — established bergenias are decidedly drought-proof.
  • 03Remove old brown leaves and spent flower stems close to the ground in spring.
  • 04Largely skip fertiliser; too many nutrients make the foliage soft.
  • 05Protect sensitive varieties with fleece if late frost threatens at flowering time.
  • 06Divide old, bare clumps in late summer and replant the rhizome sections.

Frequently asked

When does bergenia flower?
The main flowering falls between March and May depending on the weather — making bergenia one of the earliest flowering perennials in the garden. Some varieties like ‚Herbstblüte‘ add a second, lighter flush in September.
Is bergenia toxic to cats or dogs?
No, bergenia is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs and harmless to children too. That makes it a good choice for family gardens and graves that animals pass by.
Why are my bergenia's leaves turning red?
That is not a deficiency but by design: many varieties colour their foliage bronze-red to purple in cold and sun — a natural frost protection and one of the plant's greatest ornamental assets. Fresh green leaves emerge in spring. Red colouring in midsummer, however, can indicate drought stress.
Does bergenia grow under trees?
Yes, it is one of the few perennials that cope with root pressure and dry shade under trees. Water regularly there in the first year until it is established — after that it perseveres where almost everything else gives up.
