Forsythia

Forsythia · Oleaceae

When forsythia flowers, spring is official: in March and April the branches cover themselves completely in golden-yellow bell blooms before the leaves appear. The shrub is entirely undemanding, grows in almost any garden soil and forgives beginner mistakes. In floristry we value forsythia branches as forcing stock — cut stems open indoors weeks ahead of the garden.

Sunny to semi-shade; flowering drops off noticeably in shade.

Water only in the planting year and during long dry spells; very undemanding once established.

Forsythia

The standard cultivar in the trade is Forsythia intermedia „Lynwood Gold“ with large, densely set flowers; „Minigold“ or the weak-growing „Goldrausch“ stay more compact. For small gardens these dwarf forms are worth a look, because a mature forsythia quickly reaches two to three metres in height and spread.

The most important point of care is pruning — and this is where the most common mistake happens: forsythia flowers on wood that is two or more years old. Prune it in autumn or winter and you remove the entire display. The right approach is a thinning cut straight after flowering in May, removing the oldest shoots near the ground.

Left unpruned, the shrub ages from the inside and eventually flowers only at the shoot tips. A bold rejuvenation prune every few years — a third of the old shoots out — keeps it flowering reliably. Otherwise forsythia is modest: sun to semi-shade, and the more light, the denser the bloom.

Ecologically, honesty is due: the flowers of the common garden forms are largely sterile and offer bees hardly any nectar or pollen. If you are planning an insect-friendly garden, combine forsythia with genuine bee plants such as willow, cornelian cherry or single-flowered spring perennials — or choose it consciously as pure ornament.

In the workshop, forsythia branches are a classic of spring and forcing floristry. Branches cut from December onwards can be forced indoors (the Barbara branch principle): cut at an angle, place in lukewarm water, change the water every few days — the buds open after one to three weeks. The closer to the natural flowering date you cut, the faster and more reliably it works.

Is Forsythia toxic to children and pets?

Children
Mildly irritating
Cats
Mildly irritating
Dogs
Mildly irritating

Forsythia is considered mildly toxic: flowers, leaves and fruit contain small amounts of saponins and glycosides. Serious poisoning is not expected, but children and pets should still be kept from nibbling the eye-catching yellow flowers.

Typical symptoms: After larger amounts: gastrointestinal upset such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea.

In an emergency:call the German poison control centre in Bonn on +49 228 19240 (24/7) — for pets, contact an emergency vet directly. This information does not replace medical or veterinary advice.

Care

  • 01Sunny to semi-shaded position — the more sun, the richer the bloom.
  • 02Ordinary garden soil is enough; just avoid persistent waterlogging.
  • 03Thin out straight after flowering: remove the oldest shoots near the ground.
  • 04Never prune in autumn or winter, or the flowering is lost.
  • 05Rejuvenate every few years so the shrub does not age from the inside.
  • 06Cut forcing branches from December on, trim at an angle and place in lukewarm water.

Frequently asked

When do you prune forsythia?
Straight after flowering, in May. Forsythia blooms on older wood — pruning in autumn or winter removes the flower buds that are already set, and the shrub stays bare in spring. When pruning, thin the oldest shoots out near the ground rather than shortening everything evenly.
Why is my forsythia not flowering?
The three most common causes: pruning at the wrong time (autumn/winter), too little light, or an over-aged, never-thinned shrub that only flowers at the tips. More rarely, flower buds freeze in very hard winters. A rejuvenation prune after the next bloom plus more light solves it in almost every case.
How do I force forsythia branches in a vase?
Cut branches with plump, clearly visible flower buds — traditionally on December 4th as Barbara branches, though from January it works more reliably. Trim at an angle, place in lukewarm water, keep bright and not too warm, and change the water every two to three days. The golden flowers open after one to three weeks.
Is forsythia bee-friendly?
Hardly, unfortunately. The flowers of the usual garden forms are largely sterile and offer almost no nectar or pollen — forsythia is purely ornamental. If you genuinely want to help insects in spring, plant goat willow, cornelian cherry or wild fruit trees as well.
