Grape Hyacinth
Muscari · Asparagaceae
Hardly any spring blue is as rich as that of the grape hyacinth: racemes densely set with little bells, glowing between daffodils and tulips from March. Muscari are robust, naturalise reliably and, as potted stock, are favourites of Easter floristry. We buy our grape hyacinths in budded nursery quality directly at the Veiling Rhein-Maas.

The key species is Muscari armeniacum with cobalt-blue racemes — the standard for borders, pots and cutting. Alongside it are pale blue „Valerie Finnis“, white cultivars such as „White Magic“ and the two-tone Muscari latifolium, whose racemes are dark below and light above.
The name is no accident: the closed flower clusters resemble small, upside-down bunches of grapes, and some species have a musky scent — hence „Muscari“. In Easter floristry the pots are indispensable, in a glass with a little moss or in a bowl with primroses and horned violets.
In the garden grape hyacinths are first-class naturalisers: once planted, they multiply via offset bulbs and seed and form blue ribbons over the years. If you do not want that, cut off the spent racemes before the seed ripens — the spread via daughter bulbs then stays manageable.
One quirk confuses many people: Muscari armeniacum sends up foliage in autumn that overwinters green. That is normal and no sign of premature growth. The foliage must not be cut off in autumn or winter, as it feeds the bulb for the spring bloom.
As a cut flower the grape hyacinth is a small treasure: in mini bouquets with tulips, ranunculus and forget-me-nots it lasts about a week. Incidentally, we prefer to pull the stems from the plant rather than cut them — they stay fresh longer and the bulb takes no harm.
Is Grape Hyacinth toxic to children and pets?
- Children
- Mildly irritating
- Cats
- Mildly irritating
- Dogs
- Mildly irritating
Grape hyacinths are considered mildly toxic; the bulbs contain saponins and other irritants. Small nibbles on the foliage are usually harmless, while larger amounts — above all bulbs — can cause gastrointestinal upset. Keep pots out of reach of pets and small children.
Typical symptoms: After ingestion of larger amounts: drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain.

Overview: toxic & non-toxic plants for cats, dogs and children
Care
- 01Choose a sunny to partially shaded spot with free-draining soil.
- 02Plant bulbs in autumn about six to eight centimetres deep in groups.
- 03Keep moderately moist during growth and flowering; avoid waterlogging.
- 04Leave the bulbs' autumn foliage in place — it overwinters green and feeds the plant.
- 05Cut off spent flowers if you do not want self-seeding.
- 06Plant potted stock out in the garden after flowering, where it returns every year.
Frequently asked
- When do grape hyacinths flower?
- Outdoors from roughly mid-March to May, lasting three to four weeks depending on species and weather. Forced pots from the nursery are available from February — kept cool they last two to three weeks indoors.
- Are grape hyacinths toxic to cats?
- They are considered mildly toxic. A nibbled leaf is rarely a problem, but the bulbs can cause vomiting and diarrhoea. Keep pots out of reach and contact a vet if clear symptoms appear.
- Why does my grape hyacinth already have leaves in autumn?
- That is completely normal for the Armenian grape hyacinth: it produces its foliage in autumn and overwinters green. Please do not cut it off — the leaves feed the bulb and the flowers appear in spring as usual.
- How do you stop muscari spreading too much?
- Cut the racemes right after flowering before the seed ripens — self-seeding is the main way they spread. To be completely safe, plant the bulbs in baskets; that also keeps the offset bulbs contained.
