January is the quiet hero of the cut-flower year. Spring messengers already arrive from Dutch greenhouses at the auction, while year-round imports keep any sense of winter shortage at bay. Buying flowers in January gets you fresher stock than most expect.

Tulips are in top form in January. The season starts late December and runs into April — January is the first month with broad variety available: single, double, parrot, French. Pastels and saturated tones side by side.

Ranunculus get interesting from mid-January. Buds are large, palette wide (white through peach to burgundy). Lasts 7–10 days in the vase, reads more grown-up than tulips — a good pick for birthdays and business clients.

Anemones bloom too — especially the black-and-white and deep blue variants. Short vase life (5–7 days) but visually strong and a winter speciality unavailable in summer.

Hyacinths with bulb are the classic winter gift into the home. If you love the intense fragrance, buy now — the scent carries through a whole room.

Imports: roses from Kenya and Ecuador, lilies from Holland, gerberas, chrysanthemums — all stable year-round.

What we don't recommend in January: peonies (May onwards), sunflowers (July–October), dahlias (August–October). Available as imports but feel out of place in January.
