If florists had to pick a favourite month, it would be May. Peonies in full glory, lily of the valley with delicate scent, late lilac, Mother's Day right in the middle — May is the densest floristry month of the year.
Peonies are May's headliners. Three to four weeks of peak season, then gone for a year. Peony lovers buy now. Buds need 3–5 days to open — patience pays off, because an open peony is more beautiful than any other cut flower.
Lily of the valley blooms briefly and carries an unmistakable scent. Important: lily of the valley is very toxic (to humans AND pets). In households with cats or children, better avoided.
Lilac holds until mid-May, then disappears.
Late tulips, ranunculus in late season, first summer flowers like lilies and phlox arrive.
Mother's Day (second Sunday in May) is the year's second peak day after Valentine's. We don't source our May stock to 'hold inventory' but in waves per order — fresher in the customer's vase.
Weddings typically start in Düsseldorf from May. Peony bridal bouquets are the May cliché — but rightfully so. There's no better moment in the floristry year.
May is also time for plant gifts instead of cut flowers — potted plants for the balcony. Mothers with gardens often prefer a planted composition over a one-off bouquet.
