Sunflowers: Symbolism, Occasions, Honest Look Check
Pure joy and summer — but also a touch of 90s wedding kitsch. When they work, when not.

Sunflowers communicate loud and clear: joy, summer, energy. That's both advantage and risk — giving sunflowers can't be subtle.
Classic symbolism: joy of life, warmth, sun. In antiquity a symbol of devotion (the plant turns toward the sun — phototropism). For van Gogh a symbol of dedication and beauty.
Gift occasions where sunflowers work: get-well bouquets (uplifting), men's birthdays (less sweet than roses), summer festivals, outdoor weddings with farm context, children's events (school start, communion).
Occasions where they DON'T fit: funeral (too loud, too cheerful), formal receptions (too placard), classic weddings in elegant city hotels (too farm-like), Valentine's (no romantic symbol).
Size play: one large sunflower in a bud vase reads graphic and modern. A bouquet of 12 medium sunflowers reads classic-generous. 3–5 small sunflower varieties mixed reads especially contemporary.
Combination flowers: sunflowers love eucalyptus (modernises them), baby's breath (classic-romantic), asters and dahlias (summer statement), dried grasses (meadow look).
What makes them less loud: dark-centred sunflower varieties ('Italian White' or 'Moulin Rouge') are less placard than the classic yellow. For subtler sunflowers ask for these.
Season: from July from German cultivation, lasts to October. Imports from southern Europe extend the season to early December. Outside that, not available fresh.
Vase life: 10–14 days. One of the longest-lasting cut flowers. Keep stem straight in the centre (self-supports), water deep, change every 2–3 days.
Frequently asked
- Are sunflowers a good gift for women?
- Generally yes, but careful with the classic look: a classic sunflower bouquet reads 90s. Modernly composed (with eucalyptus and dried grasses) it reads contemporary.
- Which sunflower varieties do you stock?
- Classic yellow varieties (Sonnengold, Sunrich), dark-centred (Moulin Rouge, Black Magic), white/cream (Italian White), mini-sunflowers (Choco Sun). Seasonal 4–8 varieties.
- Does a sunflower fit a funeral?
- Only if the deceased loved sunflowers — then a very moving gesture. By default no, too loud. A single sunflower in a quiet mourning bouquet usually feels out of place.
