Never-Never Plant

Ctenanthe · Marantaceae

Ctenanthe is the often overlooked relative of calathea and maranta — yet it is tougher than both. Its leaves carry a striking striped or herringbone pattern, in many species with a purple-red underside, and fold upright in the evening with an audible rustle. If you want the leaf splendour of a calathea but have failed with one before, this is the more forgiving alternative.

Two species dominate the range. Ctenanthe burle-marxii, named after the Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, stays compact and shows the famous herringbone pattern. Ctenanthe oppenheimiana, often sold as the variety „Tricolor“ with creamy-white patches, grows much larger and bushier — up to a metre indoors.

Like all prayer plants, ctenanthe is a shade dweller of the forest floor. It wants a bright to semi-shaded spot but never direct sun, which bleaches the pattern and scorches the leaf edges. A purely north-facing window works well too.

The decisive care factor is humidity. In dry heated air the leaves curl and develop brown, crackly edges. A spot in a bright bathroom, regular misting with soft water or grouping several plants together all help.

Water evenly with room-temperature, preferably soft water — the root ball should stay lightly moist throughout without ever standing in water. Hard, limy tap water leaves prayer plants with brown leaf tips over time; rested or filtered water is the better choice.

The evening raising of the leaves, the so-called sleep movement, is completely normal and actually a good sign: a plant that folds up at night and opens again in the morning is doing well. If the leaves stay curled permanently, humidity or watering is usually off.

Non-toxic

Like all members of the prayer plant family, ctenanthe is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs and people — one of the best foliage plants for pet households. Nibbling is still best discouraged.

Overview: toxic & non-toxic plants for cats, dogs and children

Care

  • 01Bright to semi-shaded spot without any direct sun — a north-facing window works too.
  • 02Keep the root ball evenly, lightly moist; water with room-temperature, soft water.
  • 03Provide high humidity: mist regularly or place it in a bright bathroom.
  • 04Keep warm year-round at 18–25 °C, never below 15 °C, no draughts.
  • 05Feed lightly every four weeks from spring to autumn.
  • 06Brown leaf edges point to dry air or hard water — remove affected leaves at the base.

Frequently asked

Is ctenanthe toxic to cats?
No. Like calathea and maranta, ctenanthe belongs to the prayer plant family, which is considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. That makes it an excellent choice for pet households where many popular foliage plants are off limits.
What is the difference between ctenanthe and calathea?
Both are closely related prayer plants with similar needs. Ctenanthe, however, grows bushier with branching stems, often gets larger and is noticeably more forgiving of care slips such as fluctuating humidity. If your calatheas keep developing brown edges, ctenanthe is the more relaxed option.
Why does my ctenanthe raise its leaves at night?
That is the typical sleep movement of the prayer plant family: a joint at the leaf stalk lets the leaves fold upright in darkness and lower again in the morning. The evening rustling is normal and shows the plant is in good health.
Why is my ctenanthe getting brown leaf edges?
It is almost always air that is too dry, often compounded by hard tap water. Raise the humidity by misting or moving the plant to a bright bathroom, and water with rested or filtered water. Existing brown edges will not turn green again, but new leaves will grow in flawless.
