Rose Grape

Medinilla magnifica · Melastomataceae

The medinilla is the diva among flowering houseplants — and what a diva: from sturdy, leathery leaf pairs grow pendulous flower trusses up to forty centimetres long in soft pink, canopied by pink bracts like little baldachins. A medinilla in bloom is a statement. It demands warmth, humidity and a delicate touch, but rewards you with a floral spectacle lasting many weeks.

Medinilla magnifica

In its Philippine homeland the medinilla perches as an epiphyte in branch forks — which explains its two most important wishes: a loose, free-draining root zone that never stands in water, and high humidity like that of a mountain cloud forest. Both can be recreated in a living room once you know.

The ideal spot is bright and warm without direct midday sun, at 20 to 25 degrees and ideally above 50 percent humidity. Bathrooms with windows and bright kitchens are often the best rooms; above a radiator in dry air the foliage quickly develops brown edges.

The most important rule during bud formation and flowering: stop turning or moving the plant. The medinilla aligns its heavy trusses with the light and tends to answer relocation with bud drop — the most common sorrow of new medinilla owners.

Water moderately with room-temperature, soft water, only once the top layer of soil has dried. As an epiphyte it forgives a dry day far more readily than wet feet. Regular misting of the foliage or a humidifier is rewarded by the leathery leaves with a rich sheen.

After flowering, cut the spent trusses back below the flower head. For the next set of buds the medinilla then needs a nursery trick: a rest period of eight to ten weeks in winter at 16 to 18 degrees, with sparing water and no feed. This cool stimulus triggers the new buds — without it, it remains a handsome foliage plant.

For pet households the medinilla is a relaxed diva: it is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs and children. It looks its best as a solo plant on a pedestal or a clear sideboard, where the hanging trusses can float freely.

Overview: toxic & non-toxic plants for cats, dogs and children

Care

  • 01Place bright and warm (20–25 °C), out of direct midday sun and draughts.
  • 02Do not turn or move it during bud formation and flowering — bud drop threatens otherwise.
  • 03Water moderately with room-temperature, soft water; strictly avoid waterlogging.
  • 04Provide high humidity: mist the foliage or use a humidifier.
  • 05Feed lightly every two weeks from spring to summer.
  • 06In winter keep it cooler (16–18 °C) and almost dry for eight to ten weeks — that triggers the next bloom.

Frequently asked

Why is my medinilla dropping its buds?
The three main causes are relocation, draughts and dry radiator air. The medinilla aligns its heavy trusses with the light — if it is turned or moved during the bud phase, it sheds buds. A fixed spot, constant warmth and higher humidity are the answer.
Is medinilla toxic to cats?
No, Medinilla magnifica is considered non-toxic to cats, dogs and people. This spectacular tropical beauty can therefore live in pet households — though the dangling flower trusses are best kept out of playful cats' reach anyway.
How do I get my medinilla to flower again?
With a winter rest: eight to ten weeks at 16 to 18 degrees, very sparing watering and no feed. This cool, dry stimulus imitates the cool season of the Philippine mountain forest and triggers bud formation. Afterwards return to warm, normally moist care.
How long does a medinilla flower?
A healthy plant flowers for eight to twelve weeks, because the individual trusses develop in succession and the pink bracts remain decorative long after the actual florets. The cooler and brighter it stands, the longer the show lasts.
