Seasonal Flowers in October
October is the classic autumn month. Chrysanthemums take centre stage, late dahlias hold on, asters in full form, berries and autumn textures add depth. Palette: bordeaux, orange, mustard, aubergine, muted green.

Chrysanthemums become the main product in October. On German cemeteries they're tradition — which is partly why they're strongly associated with mourning in German culture. Outside the funeral context they work as 'normal' cut flowers only in modern floristry or in mixed bouquets with other varieties in the foreground.
Late dahlias: beautiful until mid-October, then ended by the first frost (often in the first half of October in Düsseldorf).
Asters continue and are often densest in October.
Hydrangeas in the 'dried' phase — many florists now cut for dried-bouquet stock.
Rosehips, hypericum berries, snowberries and small woody fruits become important components in October. Add warm depth.
First eucalyptus varieties with berries (Eucalyptus parvifolia with buds) — very popular for autumn weddings.
Disappearing in October: sunflowers (last wave), field garden roses.
Halloween and autumn decor: we also make table arrangements for Halloween parties and harvest celebrations in October — with pumpkins, berries and autumn bouquets.
Frequently asked
- Are chrysanthemums only for mourning?
- In German culture mostly yes — due to the cemetery tradition. But there are modern floristry currents using chrysanthemums consciously as an autumn flower in mixed bouquets. If you like that, combine with warm tones.
- When does dahlia season end?
- At the first frost — often mid-October in Düsseldorf. Some growers briefly cover their fields, extending the season to late October. To be safe, buy in early October.
