Asters

Aster · Asteraceae

Asters bring autumn into the bouquet — small daisy-like blooms in deep purples and pinks, often branching with many flower heads per stem. They're affordable, long-lasting and a key ingredient in autumn floristry.

Frequently asked

What's the difference between asters and chrysanthemums?
Both are in the same family. Asters are usually smaller with finer petals. Chrysanthemums are sturdier and come in more shapes (pompon, spider, etc.).
Are asters toxic to cats or dogs?
No. Asters (including the China aster, Callistephus chinensis) are listed as non-toxic to cats, dogs and horses by the ASPCA. As with any plant, nibbling on leaves or blooms can still cause mild stomach upset, so keep the bouquet out of reach of curious pets to be safe.
How long do asters last in a vase?
Asters are very long-lasting and keep for 7 to 14 days with good care. Cut the stems at an angle, strip the lower leaves, change the water every 2–3 days and keep the bouquet as cool as possible to get the most out of their vase life.
When are asters in season?
Asters are a classic autumn flower. The field season runs from August through November, peaking in September and October — exactly when dahlias, sunflowers and rose hips pair so beautifully with them.
