Aspidistra (Cast-Iron Plant)
Aspidistra elatior · Spargelgewächse (Asparagaceae)
Aspidistra is the most robust foliage we keep in the workshop: leathery, glossy dark-green leaves that give an arrangement structure and architecture. We have rarely seen a cut green last this long. A single leaf shapes a bouquet; rolled or looped it adds a modern accent.

Aspidistra elatior produces large, lance-shaped leaves that grow straight from the rhizome and reach up to 60 centimetres in length. Plain green is the standard, alongside variegated and speckled cultivars such as Variegata, Milky Way and Asahi that stand out as a single statement leaf.
In floristry the aspidistra leaf is a classic for structural work. It can be rolled, looped, folded and shaped with fine wire without breaking. We use it as a collar around compact bouquets, as a looped element in modern arrangements or laid flat as a calm backdrop for colourful blooms.
Quality shows in a firm, flawless leaf without brown tips and with an even sheen. We buy top-grade leaves, re-sort them in the workshop and keep the foliage cool so it truly delivers its exceptional shelf life instead of just the usual seven days.
Stylistically the aspidistra is a connector: with calla, anthurium and strelitzia the leaf reinforces a clean, graphic line, while with roses and peonies it acts as a calm, elegant frame. Rolled or shaped into a funnel it gives summer bouquets and winter arrangements alike a timeless, architectural note.
Care
- 01Cut the stems fresh at an angle and place the leaf into lukewarm water straight away.
- 02Use a clean vase and fresh water; do not let leaves sit in the water or the stem ends will rot.
- 03Keep it cool and out of direct sun, then the foliage lasts for several weeks.
- 04Change the water every two to three days and recut the stems each time.
- 05Wipe dusty leaves with a damp cloth to refresh their natural sheen.
- 06For shaping, the leaves can be rolled or looped with fine wire without breaking.
Frequently asked
- How long does aspidistra foliage last in the vase?
- Exceptionally long: with a fresh cut, clean water and a cool spot the leaves stay beautiful for two to four weeks. Aspidistra outlasts almost every cut flower and is a rewarding, long-lived structural green.
- Is aspidistra toxic to cats and dogs?
- No. The cast-iron plant is considered non-toxic and, according to the ASPCA, is safe for cats, dogs and horses. That makes it one of the most pet-friendly greens we work with.
- When is aspidistra in season?
- As cut foliage aspidistra is available all year round. We source the leaves continuously, so the quality stays consistently high throughout the year.
- What is the aspidistra leaf used for in floristry?
- Mainly for structure and architecture: as a collar around bouquets, rolled or looped in modern arrangements and laid flat as a calm backdrop. The firm leaf can be bent and shaped without breaking.
