Celosia (Cockscomb)

Celosia argentea · Amaranthaceae (Fuchsschwanzgewächse)

Celosia is arguably the most sculptural cut flower of high summer: velvety cockscombs or blazing feathered plumes in colours that seem to glow. We source ours fresh from the Veiling Rhein-Maas, so this already robust flower lasts remarkably long in the vase.

Botanically most celosias are grouped under Celosia argentea, yet their appearance varies greatly. Three groups matter in floristry: Cristata, with its dense, brain- or coral-like crested combs; Plumosa, with soft, feathery plumes; and Spicata, with slender, wheat-like spikes. Cristata varieties are considered particularly long-lived.

In floristry celosia is a rewarding focal flower. We like to use the compact cockscombs as a calm surface within texture-rich bouquets, while the feathered Plumosa types add movement and lightness. The spike-shaped Spicata looks almost grass-like and is ideal for loosening up airy summer arrangements.

Quality in celosia shows in firm, velvety flower heads free of brown edges and in crisp, straight stems. Because we buy directly at the auction in Venlo rather than through middlemen, the stems reach us freshly cut and well hydrated. That is why, with good care, this flower lasts well beyond the industry-standard seven days.

Stylistically celosia suits a warm, summery, earthy palette. Combined with dahlias, zinnias, amaranth or hydrangeas it creates voluminous, almost baroque bouquets. For a more modern look, single cockscombs pair graphically with grasses and dried elements. Celosia also dries very well, keeping its shape and colour surprisingly intact.

Care

  • 01Cut the stems at an angle with a sharp knife to maximise water uptake.
  • 02Remove every leaf that would sit below the water line. Celosia foliage wilts earlier than the bloom and otherwise rots quickly.
  • 03Use a clean vase and fresh, cool water, and add flower food.
  • 04Change the water every two to three days and re-cut the stems each time.
  • 05Avoid direct sun, draughts and proximity to fruit (ethylene), which noticeably extends vase life.

Frequently asked

How long does celosia last in the vase?
With clean water and regular re-cutting, celosias last ten to fourteen days. The crested Cristata varieties usually outlast the feathered Plumosa types.
Is celosia toxic to cats, dogs or children?
No. Celosia is considered non-toxic. The ASPCA lists the common forms as safe for dogs and cats, and in parts of Africa and Asia the young shoots are even eaten as a vegetable. We still advise against eating the ornamental form.
When is celosia in season?
Celosia is a classic summer flower. Its main season runs from July into October, reliably available to us via the Veiling Rhein-Maas from roughly June to October.
Can celosia be dried?
Yes, excellently. Hung upside down in an airy, dark place, celosia retains its shape and colour very well, making it ideal for long-lasting dried arrangements.
