Panicum (Switchgrass)

Panicum virgatum · Poaceae (Süßgräser)

Panicum, switchgrass, is an airy cutting grass with delicately branched, veil-like panicles that lend depth and movement to any bouquet. We buy it freshly cut at the Veiling Rhein-Maas — with grasses in particular, A1 quality shows immediately in the fine panicle that does not shed.

Botanically, Panicum virgatum belongs to the grass family (Poaceae) and grows in upright clumps to around 150 cm. The delicate, cloud-like flower panicles appear from July and stay attractive into late autumn — exactly the window in which switchgrass arrives at the Veiling as a cutting grass.

In floristry we value panicum as an airy filler: the fine panicles float between the main blooms and take the heaviness out of a bouquet without making it restless. Unlike denser greenery such as asparagus or eucalyptus, panicum brings transparency — you look right through the grass.

Common cultivars differ mainly in autumn colour: 'Heavy Metal' with blue-green culms, 'Shenandoah' and 'Prairie Fire' with reddish tips, 'Northwind' strictly upright, and bronze-foliaged types. For the vase we choose fresh-green or already bronze-toned cuts depending on the bouquet.

Stylistically panicum fits the natural, meadow-like trend beautifully: with dahlias, rudbeckia, asters and hydrangeas in a late-summer bouquet, but equally as a purist statement in modern vase work. Dried, the panicle lasts for months and is a popular element in autumn dried bouquets and wreaths.

Care

  • 01Cut the culms at an angle with a sharp knife — do not crush.
  • 02Remove lower leaves that would sit in the water.
  • 03Medium-deep, clean water; change and recut every 3 to 4 days.
  • 04Keep cool and out of direct sun — this keeps the panicle fresh longer and slows the colour change.
  • 05To dry, hang upside down in an airy, shaded spot; the panicle then holds shape and colour for months.
  • 06Very generous and long-lasting — panicum usually outlives the main flowers and can be reused dried afterwards.

Frequently asked

How long does panicum last in the vase?
As a cutting grass, switchgrass is remarkably durable: in clean water it usually stays fresh for 10 to 14 days, often longer. With good A1 stock it easily outlasts the other flowers in the bouquet and can then be dried.
Is panicum toxic to cats, dogs or children?
Panicum virgatum is an ornamental and meadow grass and is non-toxic to cats, dogs and children. Concerns only exist for horses grazing it in large pasture quantities — as a cut grass in a vase there is no risk. As with all plants, pets should nevertheless not nibble on it.
When is panicum in season as cut greenery?
The main season runs from late summer into autumn, roughly July to November, when the panicles are fully developed. During this period panicum is especially fresh and abundant at the Veiling Rhein-Maas.
Can I dry panicum?
Yes, very well. Hung upside down in an airy, shaded spot, the panicle keeps its shape and a warm bronze-to-beige tone, making it a rewarding element for dried bouquets and autumn wreaths for months.
