Sympathy Ribbon Texts: 40 Phrases for Wreaths and Coffin Bouquets

When words are hard to find — a curated collection, sorted by relationship and situation.

Funeral wreath with ribbon

Sympathy ribbon texts are part of German floristry tradition. They should be short, clear and respectful. We help customers daily find the right wording. Here are 40 tested texts sorted by situation.

General, classic and restrained: 'In quiet mourning', 'In love and gratitude', 'In memory', 'In honoured remembrance', 'A final farewell', 'We will miss you'.

From close family: 'In love, [name]', 'Unforgotten, [name]', 'I miss you, Mum' / 'I miss you, Dad', 'Until we meet again', 'Thank you for everything'.

From partner / spouse: 'In deepest love', 'My life, my heart', 'Our paths ended too soon', 'To the end, [name]', 'You are in me, always'.

From siblings: 'In sisterly / brotherly love', 'You will always be missed, [name]', 'We miss our sister / brother'.

From grandparents / grandchildren: 'Grandma, you remain in us' / 'Grandpa, thank you for the time', 'We miss you, Granny', 'You shaped us'.

From friends: 'In friendship, [names]', 'We miss you, old friend', 'You're missed by all', 'We often think of you'.

From clubs and organisations: 'The board and members of [club]', 'With respect, [company]', 'We say farewell with gratitude', 'In the name of all colleagues'.

After serious illness / long suffering: 'Finally at peace', 'Rest in peace', 'Your struggle is over', 'We are grateful for the time'.

After sudden death: 'Far too soon', 'We are stunned', 'See you soon, [name]', 'We say farewell in pain'.

Religious phrasings: 'May he / she rest in peace', 'In eternal remembrance', 'May God grant eternal peace', 'We trust in the resurrection'.

Very short, powerful texts: '[Name]', 'Thank you' + name, 'Farewell, [name]', '[Name] – always with us'.

Formatting: ribbon usually in print letters in black or dark purple on white or cream. For very personal ribbons handwriting is possible (on request). Ribbon length: 60–80 cm per side.

Which ribbon to which piece: wreaths and coffin bouquets get a wider ribbon (5–7 cm). Grave arrangements and smaller bouquets a narrower (3–4 cm). At funerals with multiple contributions, florists ensure ribbon lengths look similar.

What we recommend against: quotes without a clear source (better own words), overly long ribbons (lose their accent), brightly striped ribbons (unusual in Germany), smileys or symbols (out of place).

Special case — child: at a child's funeral, shorter, gentler texts fit. 'Dear little [name]', 'You remain with us', 'Sleep well, sweetheart'. We always discuss this in person, as it's one of the hardest occasions.
