Flowers as a Host Gift

A host gift should bring joy, not chores. The classic is a small hand-tied bouquet — large enough to count, small enough not to take over half the dinner table. We tie it to fit almost any vase, and on request deliver it straight to the address before you even arrive.

Small hand-tied bouquet as a host gift in soft pastel tones

The single most important rule for a host gift: small and tied, not large and loose. A lavish bouquet forces the host to hunt for a big vase mid-greeting, trim stems and fetch water — exactly when they should be welcoming guests. A compact, ready-tied bouquet goes into water in ten seconds and never interrupts the evening.

Stylistically a restrained, single- or two-colour bouquet works better than a wild mix. Freesias, ranunculus, small tulips or a few roses with a little eucalyptus or ruscus look grown-up and unobtrusive. Avoid deep-red roses — that’s the romantic code and can read awkwardly as a host gift. Pastels, white or muted tones are the safe choice.

What doesn’t pay off: the bouquet grabbed in a rush from the petrol station or supermarket. Those flowers have been sitting for days, and it shows. From a florist the bouquet comes out of fresh water, filled with stems we source each morning in A1 quality at the Veiling Rhein-Maas — the difference in vase life and looks is obvious on the dinner table.

A personal tip from over 45 years in Pempelfort: love over volume. Seven flawless stems in a calm colour make a better host gift than twenty mediocre ones. If you want to be sure, have the bouquet delivered to the address beforehand — then it’s already in water when you ring the bell, and the handover costs no one a single move.

Frequently asked

How large should a host-gift bouquet be?
Deliberately small and easy to handle — a compact, tied bouquet that fits a normal vase. That way the host doesn’t have to re-pot or trim stems mid-greeting. Seven to ten good stems are plenty.
Which colour is appropriate as a host gift?
Pastels, white or muted tones are ideal — they read as appreciative without being pushy. Better to avoid deep-red roses, as they can be misread as a love message.
Should I bring the bouquet myself or have it delivered?
Either works. We keep the ready-tied bouquet ready for pickup. If you want to make it even easier for the host, we deliver it to the address beforehand — then it’s already in water when you ring the bell.
When do I need to order for same-day delivery?
For same-day delivery in Düsseldorf, order by late morning. That lets us tie the bouquet fresh and get it to the address in good time before your visit.
