Haworthia

Haworthia · Asphodelaceae

Haworthia is the perfect succulent for anyone short on space and time: a palm-sized rosette that grows reliably on a windowsill for years and asks for almost nothing. Unlike many succulents it also copes with less sun, and it is non-toxic to cats and dogs. We stock changing species in small pot sizes from our buying at the Veiling Rhein-Maas.

Haworthia

The best-known representative is the zebra haworthia (Haworthiopsis fasciata or attenuata) with white cross-bands on dark green, pointed leaves. Alongside it are the soft, windowed species such as Haworthia cooperi and Haworthia truncata, whose translucent leaf tips look like little panes of glass — in nature they let light into the buried leaf interior.

Its big advantage over echeverias and cacti: haworthias are semi-shade plants. An east or west window is entirely sufficient, while harsh midday sun behind glass turns the leaves reddish brown. That makes it one of the few succulents for spots where others etiolate or scorch.

The most common mistake — as with almost all succulents — is watering too often. The thick leaves store water for weeks; if the rosette sits permanently wet, the roots rot invisibly in the pot. Water rarely but thoroughly, and pour off any excess.

Over time haworthias produce offsets and grow into small cushions. The pups are easy to separate when repotting and can be potted individually, so one plant becomes a whole windowsill collection over the years. The thin flower stalks with inconspicuous white tubular blooms can be left or twisted out.

In the workshop we like using haworthias in succulent bowls, mini gardens and as a row of matching pots on narrow windowsills. They combine well with echeverias and small aloes — the only requirement is that all partners tolerate the same sparing watering rhythm.

Haworthias are considered non-toxic to cats, dogs and children and are among the succulents we recommend for pet households. As with any ornamental plant, nibbling is still best discouraged.

Overview: toxic & non-toxic plants for cats, dogs and children

Care

  • 01A bright spot without harsh midday sun — an east or west window is ideal.
  • 02Water only when the substrate has dried out completely; in winter only every few weeks.
  • 03Never pour water into the rosette, or the heart of the plant may rot.
  • 04Use free-draining cactus soil, ideally with a mineral component.
  • 05Feed once or twice in summer with cactus fertiliser — that is enough.
  • 06Separate offsets when repotting and pot them individually once the pot gets crowded.

Frequently asked

Is haworthia toxic to cats?
No, haworthias are considered non-toxic to cats and dogs. That makes them a good alternative to true aloe vera, whose leaf sap is mildly toxic to pets — the two do look quite similar.
How often should I water a haworthia?
In summer roughly every two to three weeks, once the substrate is completely dry. In winter a sip every four to six weeks is enough. Overwatering is the only reliable way to kill a haworthia.
Why are my haworthia's leaf tips turning brown or red?
A reddish-brown tint is usually sun stress: the spot is too bright, often a south window in high summer. Moved slightly back from the glass or to an east window, the plant greens up again. Dry, papery tips on the lowest leaves are simply normal ageing.
Can I propagate haworthia offsets myself?
Yes, very easily: separate the basal pups with a bit of root when repotting, let them dry for a day and set them in dry cactus soil. Water lightly for the first time only after about a week — they then root reliably.
