ZZ Plant

Zamioculcas zamiifolia · Araceae (Aronstabgewächse)

The ZZ plant is probably the most low-maintenance houseplant there is: glossy, waxy pinnate leaves on upright stems that shrug off dark corners and the occasional missed watering. We love it because it still looks fresh after years and never lets anyone down.

Bright to semi-shaded, indirect light preferred; tolerates dark spots surprisingly well too.
Watering
Sparing: let soil dry between waterings, every 2–3 weeks in summer, less in winter. Avoid waterlogging.

Botanical
Zamioculcas zamiifolia

Its hallmark is the paired, leathery-glossy leaflets running along thick, fleshy stems. Below ground the ZZ plant stores water in sturdy rhizomes, which is why it sails through long dry spells. It grows slowly but reliably, pushing out new stems in light green that darken over time.

The cultivars are worth a look: the classic species is rich green, the compact dwarf 'Zenzi' stays bushy and low, and the cultivar 'Raven' (also 'Black Raven') emerges green and turns to near-black purple — a modern eye-catcher. 'Super Nova' goes in a similarly dark direction.

For interior planting and floristry the ZZ plant is a workhorse: ideal for offices, hallways, bedrooms and stairwells, exactly the spots where other plants struggle. As a housewarming, opening or 'office plant for frequent travellers' gift it is hard to beat.

Stylistically the upright, graphic shape suits plain pots in anthracite, beige or matte white. We like pairing it with a second, lighter-green plant for contrast — while the dark 'Raven' looks strongest on its own in a pale container.

Care

  • 01Bright to semi-shaded spot with indirect light; tolerates dark corners surprisingly well too.
  • 02Water sparingly: let the soil dry out well between waterings, roughly every 2–3 weeks in summer, less in winter.
  • 03Avoid waterlogging at all costs — it is the most common cause of rotting rhizomes.
  • 04Room temperature 18–24°C, no cold draughts; copes easily with dry heated air.
  • 05Feed only lightly (about once a month from spring to summer), repot only when the rhizomes burst the pot.

Frequently asked

Is the ZZ plant toxic to cats, dogs and children?
Yes, mildly toxic. All parts contain calcium oxalate crystals; the sap can irritate skin and mucous membranes, and ingestion causes burning, drooling and nausea. This applies to cats and dogs alike. Keep out of reach of pets and small children and wear gloves when cutting.
How often should I water the ZZ plant?
Far less often than most people think. It stores water in rhizomes and stems, so every 2–3 weeks in summer and even less in winter is enough. Better too little than too much: soggy soil is the most common cause of death.
Is the ZZ plant suitable for dark rooms and beginners?
Perfect for both. It copes with low light and forgives irregular watering, which is why we happily recommend it for offices, hallways and anyone with little time for plants. With good care it lasts many years.
Why are my ZZ plant's leaves turning yellow?
Almost always overwatering is the cause. Yellow leaves and soft stems point to waterlogging and rotting rhizomes. Let the soil dry out thoroughly and check that the pot drains well.
