Graduation Flowers
A-levels, state exams, a bachelor's degree, a master craftsman's certificate — a passed milestone calls for colour. This is not the moment for quiet pastels but for the cheerful, congratulatory bouquet: sunflowers, gerbera, dahlias in bold tones. We bind the bouquet from whatever arrives freshest at the Veiling Rhein-Maas auction that morning and deliver it in time for the celebration in Düsseldorf.

For a passed exam the rule is: bold beats demure. A congratulatory bouquet is allowed to be loud. Sunflowers are the obvious hero — they stand for success, sunshine and a confident look ahead. For something a touch more refined, combine them with gerbera in orange and pink, or with dahlias, which from late summer into autumn bring exactly the festive fullness such a day deserves.
For young graduates a cheerful mix works better than a strict single-variety bouquet: gerbera, ranunculus and a few sunflowers, loosely bound, framed in eucalyptus. It reads young, congratulatory and not at all stiff. For an adult's degree or professional exam it may be a shade more elegant — lisianthus and dahlias in deeper tones lend the bouquet dignity without dimming the joy.
What we tend to avoid for graduation: deep-red roses. They are the romantic code and send the wrong signal in a congratulation. Purely white, very quiet bouquets also feel almost too restrained here — they belong more to a christening or a funeral. If you like white, break it up with yellow, orange or pink so the festive note stays.
A practical tip from 45 years near the Hofgarten: a few strong heads beat a dense jumble. Five large-headed gerbera with three sunflowers and some greenery stand taller and last longer than two dozen thin stems. And because we source at the Veiling Rhein-Maas ourselves every day, the bouquet comes from freshly filled water — not stock that has sat in a bucket for days.
Frequently asked
- Which flowers suit a passed graduation?
- Cheerful, bold colours: sunflowers, gerbera and dahlias in yellow, orange and pink. They read congratulatory and festive. We avoid deep-red roses here — they are the romantic code, not the one for congratulations.
- How large should a congratulatory exam bouquet be?
- Better a few strong heads than many thin stems. Five large-headed gerbera with three sunflowers and some greenery stand upright and last longer than two dozen mediocre stems.
- Can the bouquet be delivered in time for the certificate ceremony?
- Yes. We deliver across Düsseldorf on the day, on both sides of the Rhine. For a fixed time, order a day or two ahead so we can source specifically at the Veiling Rhein-Maas in the morning.
- Do sunflowers also suit an adult's degree?
- Yes, especially then. For a slightly more elegant look, combine them with lisianthus and dahlias in deeper tones — that lends the bouquet dignity without dimming the joy.
